Weekend winds are expected to fan some of the nine currently contained, underground fires which flared up after Monday, May 7, lightning storms.

Opening his iPad, County Administrator Craig Coffey used new county technology to show where the fires started earlier in the week in western Flagler. He showed images of the county map, with flame icons indicating exact locations, as well as more detailed Google Earth photos, taken from satellites.

Of the nine fires started earlier in the week, he said, all were of negligible size and quickly contained.

“They got on them right away,” he said of fire workers. “(But) although we put the fires out, we have to track them for another week or so.”

A map of current fires — active and contained — will be included in future print editions of the Palm Coast Observer.
