The following is adapted from a media release by the Florida Highway Patrol:
An improper turn by a 17-year-old driver caused a crash at 2:55 p.m. May 9, at State Road 100 and Old Kings Road.
Preliminary investigative findings by the Florida Highway Patrol indicate that Shantell Cleare, 17, was driving a 1995 Honda Civic west on State Road 100 in the left turn lane. Khadijah James, 17, was her passenger.
Falana Peterson, 35, was driving a 1995 Cadillac STS east on State Road 100. Ahmon Sheffield, 13, was her passenger. Both drivers and both passengers are from Palm Coast.
Cleare attempted to execute a left turn to enter a business parking lot and violated the right of way of oncoming traffic. The front of her Civic then collided with the right side of Peterson’s STS in the inside eastbound lane of State Road 100.
Cleare’s Civic came to final rest in the grass. Peterson’s STS came to final rest in a business parking lot south of State Road 100. One was blocked for a approximately 90 minutes. Flagler County assisted with traffic control.
All involved in the crash were wearing seat belts. Cleare and James were transported to Florida Hospital Flagler for minor injuries.
