+ Schools form sales tax street team
In an attempt to increase promotions for half-cent sales tax renewal, the School Board is working to expand a marketing committee.
Contributing about $4 million in annual revenue, the half-penny will appear via referendum on the Aug. 14 primary ballot.
“We need worker bees on the pack to help us get the word out,” School Board Vice-Chair Andy Dance said May 1.
Planning to hold biweekly meetings to organize promotions, the board is also putting together a donations account for its publicity efforts, called Funding Flagler’s Educational Future.
Throughout May, School Board members will hold presentations to major groups in the area — from the Flagler County Tea Party to the Portuguese Club and local homeowner associations — to raise awareness.
“We should cover all of the political entities and all of the groups,” board member Colleen Conklin said.
“We need to have a very strong message and be very clear on … what (renewal revenues) would fund.”
Half-penny revenues can be spent only on capital projects and certain salaries.
The tax was initially approved by voters in 2002. Call 437-7526.
+ Manatees rejoice: Zones approved
From May to September, 2.4 new miles of manatee slow-speed zones have been approved in Flagler County by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Committee, to begin being enforced next year.
The zones will include areas of waterway near Hammock Dunes Parkway, Lehigh Canal and Gamble Rogers State Park — in addition to an existing .3-mile zone north and south of the State Road 100 bridge.
Nine manatee deaths from boats have been recorded in Flagler County since 2002. Five were recorded between 1974 and 2001.
Transit time through the county is expected to increase about 15 minutes.
