The County Commission reduced polling precincts and locations, following state redistricting.
At the request of Supervisor of Elections Kimberle Weeks May 7, the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a reduction and relocation of polling precincts and places.
“Adjusting precincts at this time saves us a great deal in postage, as we are already required to mail replacement voter information cards due to redistricting,” Weeks wrote in a letter to the board.
Changes to polling boundaries will cost an estimated $35,000, according to Weeks, for outsourcing printing and mailing of new registration cards.
In the 2012 elections, 22 polling locations will be available in Flagler, as opposed to the 38 locations offered in 2008.
Also new to this year’s elections, early voting (to take place in the Flagler County Library, in Palm Coast, and in the Supervisor of Elections office, at the Government Services Building) will be available Sundays. Locations will be open longer, as well, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Weeks also said that if the actual price of the mailings comes in less than estimated, a portion of the county’s $35,000 contribution would be returned.
“I have been mindful the past couple of years of the fact that voting equipment must be replaced in (2016). Therefore, I have … increased my budget … to provide the necessary tools (we) need to adequately serve the voters,” she wrote. “By consolidating precincts … we will be saving the taxpayers a tremendous amount of money as it means we will have to buy less voting equipment.”
But not all voters saw the benefit of reduced polling locations.
“This closing of the (Beverley Beach) polling place will present a hardship for a lot of (our older residents),” said Nancy Walsh, Beverley Beach city commissioner.
“If you look at last election, we only had 5,000 people come out to vote,” added Jack Carroll, a Palm Coast resident. “By taking away these precincts … you’ll make (voting even) harder.”
Weeks will soon post a map of the new locations at the Flagler County Library, in Palm Coast.
