The Flagler County Wounded Warrior Walk, a fundraising initiative to aid returning, wounded soldiers, so far has collected $3,500, according to County Commissioner George Hanns, who has taken a lead in promoting the event.

Hanns will also skydive at the upcoming Wings Over Flagler air show, partly to raise awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project and partly in memory of his brother, who died last Christmas of Agent Orange exposure from the Vietnam War.

Hanns also announced that Captain’s, BBQ Bait & Tackle, which held a grand opening March 19, has donated $500 to the project.

“They’ve just opened, and I just think that’s amazing,” Hanns said.

The 5.5-mile Flagler County Wounded Warrior Walk is 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at Flagler Palm Coast High School. It will loop through Town Center, connect to Lehigh Trail and return to the school. A shorter loop is also available.

Registration for the walk is $20 (relay teams are $100) and includes lunch at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Wounded Warriors is a not-for-profit organization that assists returning veterans with everything from medical help to buying a home.

Flagler County is also looking for corporate and private sponsors.

Information about the walk, registration and sponsorship are available at www.flagler county.org. Information about the Wounded Warrior Project is available at www.wounded warriorproject.org.
