Flagler County’s FireFlight helicopter has been busy for the past week.

Although the chopper’s main chore is fighting fires, a handful of Bike Week motorcycle accidents have kept crews busy. The helicopter has been called for service five times in the past six days to transport victims to trauma centers.

“When a person is seriously injured in an accident, minutes can mean the difference between life and death,” Flagler County Fire Rescue Chief Don Petito said. “FireFlight can land at the scene and have the patient delivered to the emergency room in a fraction of the time it takes for an ambulance to drive to the hospital.”

Flagler County paramedics assess the patient when they arrive on the scene of an accident and, if needed, can summon the helicopter.

“The major trauma centers are located in Daytona Beach, Orlando, Gainesville and Jacksonville” Petito said. “FireFlight is a valuable tool to use to take a patient quickly one of these trauma centers if needed.”
