Flagler high-school students will get hands-on experience with the robotically-assisted da Vinci Surgical System between 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, March 9, at Matanzas High School.

Students chosen to experiment with the system are from Matanzas’ S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Academy, as well as other selected science classes from Flagler Palm Coast High School.

The surgical system consists of a surgical console and a patient cart equipped with four interactive robotic arms and a high-definition 3D camera. Operators use controls that work like forceps, translating a surgeon’s movements into precise micro-movements.

“This is just one way in which the Flagler County School District is preparing students to take their place as leaders in the 21st Century,” said Katrina Townsend, director of student services. “Students (will) get a real-life look at the future in which they will be working and receiving the benefit of advances in medicine.”

Townsend also thanked Bryan Granse of Inuitive Surgical, the company that created the da Vinci Surgical System and made it available to Flagler students.

The public is invited to the event.
