A group of residents and local officials gathered Monday, March 5, at the Beverly Beach Town Hall to honor retiring Mayor Steven Emmett.

Immediately following an abbreviated commission meeting, Emmett, who served the town for 11 years, was recognized by the Town Commission for his steady leadership and presented with a plaque and personal gift.

Comments by town commissioners and other officials from within the county — including Alice Baker, Jane Mealy, Barbara Revels, Milissa Holland, Jon Netts, Bruce Campbell and Nate McLaughlin — said that that the mayor had been a critical factor in the town’s ability to achieve several milestones, including the soon-to-start water utility project, removal of billboards, and the successful Wounded Warrior Project of May 2011.

When asked what he would do with his new free time, Emmett smiled and looked toward the ocean. He said: “I’ll help my wife with her business and have a lot more time to fish.”

Gerry Gersbach, formerly vice mayor, will become mayor for the remaining year of Emmett’s term; then, elections will determine future leadership.

Others now serving on the five-member Town Commission are Jim Arnett, Frank Gromling, Ed Hess, Larry Mathies and Nancy Walsh.
