Sahmi Green, who was charged with animal cruelty for stabbing a dog to death Feb. 12, on Prospect Lane, was declared incompetent Feb. 29 by Judge Raul Zambrano.

According to court documents, Dr. Elek J. Ludvigh examined Green. Green was ruled “incompetent to proceed due to mental illness.” He meets the criteria for commitment to a treatment facility of the Department of Children and Families and will be committed to a mental health treatment facility, the court document states.

The incident drew national attention when Hands 4 Paws posted the story and amassed more than 3,000 signatures across the United States in favor of Green receiving the maximum penalty for the crime.

Klare Ly, public information officer with the State Attorney’s Office, said that sometimes defendants in similar situations have to go to counseling until they are considered competent to stand trial.
