The following is an adapted press release from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office:
A Palm Coast work crew was surprised Wednesday afternoon when they saw their full-sized, four-door dually truck, which was pulling a large trailer, drive off without them around 2:30 p.m. on State Road 100, according to a Flagler County Sheriff’s Office release.
The work crew had left the marked truck unattended near their work site at S.R. 100 and Interstate 95.
It turns out that Raymond Plumley, 53, a transient, had gotten into the vehicle and drove west on S.R. 100 and then north on Belle Terre Parkway where he pulled into the parking lot of Buddy Taylor Middle School, striking another vehicle.
Flagler County schools are out for the summer, so there were no classes at the time of the incident.
Sheriff’s Office deputies were just being notified of the vehicle theft when dispatchers received notice that the truck was at the school and the driver had fled the scene.
Plumley was located near the intersection of Palm Drive and Palmer Lane with the help of a K-9 unit, school resource officers and traffic deputies.
Plumley was charged with grand theft auto.
Plumley was most recently arrested at 7:28 p.m. Tuesday after he was found passed out on a bench at a Publix on Palm Coast Parkway. When deputies awoke him, Plumley began screaming and appeared highly intoxicated. He tried swinging at the deputies and threatened to beat them up. As deputies tried to subdue him, he jumped forward, falling to the ground which resulted in a cut above his eye. He was transported to Florida Hospital Flagler, where he was released for medical treatment.
He is facing a disorderly intoxication charge in connection with that incident.
Plumley is homeless, according to the Sheriff's Office website. He has been arrested 14 times since 2008,
