As family and friends gathered Saturday, June 23, for the 74th Flagler Habitat for Humanity house dedication, Annalyse Harrell practiced standing on one leg, a skill that every fairy princess must perfect.
After a year-and-a half of waiting and three months of building, Annalyse and her mother, Kim Harrell, were ready to move into their home on Royal Palm Lane. The three-bedroom, two-bathroom house is one of the newer layouts offered by Habitat, but something really unique about the home is that in hopes of creating a sustainable and affordable home, it is equipped with a solar hot water heater thanks to a reimbursement through Florida Power & Light and a partnership with TEO Solar.
The home was also awarded a $35,000 grant from Lowe’s, a national partner with Habitat since 2004.
“It has been an incredible experience to partner with Lowe’s both financially and to have their volunteers working with us,” said Lindsay Elliot-Hunt, executive director of Flagler Habitat. “It’s been a dream to work with them, to have the financial stability, and to grow the partnership to even more than what it already was.”
For Kim, not only was it surreal to call herself a homeowner, but she could not stop singing praises for the program and the peace of mind it brought her.
“The rate of my mortgage is something I can afford and don’t need to worry about if Annalyse has food on the table,” Harrell said. “Thanks to Habitat I can move on, I can live my life. Aside from having my child, I have never felt so much joy.”
Fighting back tears, she said: “This is a dream I would have never been able to achieve without Habitat for Humanity. I cannot wait until the day when Annalyse and I are driving home from work and I can say, ‘Let’s go home.’”
