Flagler unemployment number creeps back up in May

The May 2012 unemployment rate was 11.7% in Flagler County, tied with Hendry County for the highest in the state, and 8.7% in Volusia County.

Nonagricultural employment in the Palm Coast metro area (Flagler County) was 19,100 in May 2012, down 200 jobs (-1.0%) over the year. Statewide, employment increased by 0.7% over the same time period.

Government (+300 jobs) was the only major sector that gained jobs over the year. Six out of 10 major sectors remained unchanged over the year.

Leisure and hospitality and information (-200 jobs each) and professional and business services (-100 jobs) lost jobs over the year.

Palm Coast had the highest growth rate in government jobs, compared to the state’s other metro areas.

In the Flagler-Volusia region, the unemployment rate was 9.1% in May 2012. The April and May unemployment rates were the lowest since December 2008 when it was 8.9%. The May 2012 rate was 1.8% lower than the region’s year-ago rate.

The state unemployment rate was 0.6% point lower than the region at 8.5%. Out of a labor force of 284,348, there were 25,770 unemployed residents in the region.
