Flagler County recently won two national awards — one for its budget and the other for the George Washing Carver Community Center.
The National Association of Counties recognized the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners for its part in the renovation and reopening of the George Washington Carver Community Center, in Bunnell.
Presented in the Children and Youth category, the award is for programs that “offer new services to county residents, promote intergovernmental cooperation, go beyond mere compliance with the law and have proven results.”
The award was presented to the County Commission at its June 4 meeting.
The Carver Center project is led by County Commission Chairwoman Barabara Revels, who coordinated government, civic and church representatives to improve and reopen the nonprofit center.
The County Commission's finance team, for the third year in a row, also won the nation's highest recognition for governmental budgeting, the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association.
“It takes a of lot hard work to put together what amounts to a $140 million dollar budget,” County Administrator Craig Coffey said, in presenting the award June 5. “It is a real testament to this department’s commitment to excellence.”
