Between Tuesday, July 10, and Saturday, July 14, the Flagler Humane Society adopted out 108 pets, a record high for the shelter.

It started with 23 cats, 12 dogs, two guinea pigs, and one rabbit. Then, the shelter participated in a gigantic Super Adoptathon sponsored by First Coast No More Homeless Pets, in Jacksonville, where they adopted out an additional 57 dogs and 13 cats.

“Helping us in Jacksonville was Second Chance Rescue, who focused their efforts on FHS dogs for the first two days of the event,” said Diane Voigt, president of the board of directors at the Flagler Humane Society.

On Sunday, Second Chance adopted out another nine of its dogs. With that addition, 117 Flagler County animals were placed in homes.

“Several months ago, when we adopted out 27 animals in one week, everyone was astounded,” Voigt said. “No one ever believed that we could achieve the adoption success we experienced this weekend. And just in time, too.”

Just in time for the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100,000 Challenge. The challenge begins Aug. 1, and will run through the end of October. During that three-month period, the Humane Society must adopt out 650 animals to stay in contention for the big prize. The local shelter is competing against 49 shelters nationwide.

“We’ll be hosting and participating in several big adoptathons over that time frame and look forward to placing even more animals with loving families in our community,” Voigt said.
