La Primera Iglesia Bautista de Palm Coast started construction on a new sanctuary this month.
The expansion is part of the church’s vision of reaching out and growing, said the Rev. Angel Izquierdo.
The new addition will include a sanctuary with capacity for 200 — 50 more than the current one holds — two offices, a choir room and a prayer room.
The building that acts as the current sanctuary will be transformed into classrooms with collapsible doors to be used by the children and youth ministries.
“The children and youth will be able to feel that they are part of something, which is important,” Izquierdo said.
The fundraising process for this project has taken the church three years and is 90% complete.
With a projected completion date in June, the church has four months to raise the remaining $33,000 needed for the rest of the project. Through the Halifax Baptist Association, a few churches have committed to participating in this final financial hurdle.
Izquierdo sees the church’s growth as a way to spread the good news. Although its main target is the Hispanic community, Izquierdo invites the non-Hispanic community to participate.
“It’s a good way to practice your Spanish,” Izquierdo joked.
