The facility will feature a 70-centimeter MRI, the first in Florida.

Florida Hospital Flagler board members, employees, donors and elected officials put on their hard hats Friday, Feb. 24, for a tour of the Parkway Medical Plaza.

The three-acre lot in Cobblestone Village was purchased by the hospital in July 2011.

The 34,000-square-foot, $15 million medical plaza is now under construction near Walmart and is slated to open July 2012. It will house physician suites and outpatient hospital services, including rehabilitation, imaging, a laboratory and a women’s center.

The imaging center will be equipped with a General Electric Discovery MR750w 3.0T wide-bore MRI, which is 70 centimeters in diameter — 10 larger than standard MRIs.

The system will also have Cinemavision, which will allow patients to watch television during tests.

In addition, the Freytag Children’s Rehabilitation Center will move from its current spot at the hospital to the plaza. The swap will provide three times as much rehabilitation space, according to Bridget Bergens, director of rehabilitation services. The center will include a private sensory room, in addition to a pediatric gym, and speech and occupational therapy rooms.

Editor's Note: This story was corrected Feb. 29. It was originally reported that the 70-centimeter MRI was the first in Florida, but there is one in Volusia County, as well.
