Jack and Joan Birch, of 12th St. N., Flagler Beach, have been recognized as the March Selection of the Month by The Garden Club at Palm Coast.
They moved to Flagler Beach in 1988. Being close to the ocean and on a saltwater canal, they have selected plants that are drought- and salt-tolerant. They enjoy a natural look and have very little grass in their front yard.
There is a mounded garden with an agave as the focal point under three native oak trees, which provide shade.
Several clumps of bird of paradise flank the front entry. Indian hawthorn, Shilling holly, oleander, bougainvillea, wax myrtle, and hibiscus shrubs are scattered throughout the front yard and along the sides of the driveway.
The tropical perennial gazania, with its silver gray-felted leaves, was used as a colorful and ever-blooming groundcover.
