+ Man faces charges for stabbing dog to death
The State Attorney’s Office will charge Sahmi Green with cruelty to animals, a third-degree felony, for stabbing and killing a dog Feb. 12, in Palm Coast.
The incident occurred on Prospect Lane. Samantha Lilly called the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and said someone had stabbed her dog. Her roommate, Green, had taken the dog for a walk and told Lilly that the dog got into a fight. The dog died soon thereafter.
Green had left the scene by the time deputies arrived. The deputies observed a blood trail along the road and also found a bloody kitchen knife and a pair of eyeglasses.
Upon further investigation, deputies found a witness who said he observed Green in the kitchen retrieving the knife that was found.
Green was later arrested and jailed. A deputy then reported: “I observed Sahmi in the Flagler County Inmate Facility making squealing noises.” No other explanation was reported.
An animal rights group, Hands 4Paws, has gathered about 2,750 names nationwide in an online statement to say Green should receive the maximum punishment.
+ Fraud, counterfeit reported in Flagler County
The Sheriff’s Office highlighted three incidents last week in which Flagler County residents were victims of fraud.
An elderly Palm Coast couple reported Feb. 16 that the husband’s Social Security check had not been deposited in their checking account through direct deposit. Social Security officials told her a request had been received to deposit the amount onto a debit card. The card was then used in Miami Gardens.
A Palm Coast man is out $20 after receiving change from a Palm Coast supermarket Feb. 15. The man told deputies he had purchased groceries and his change included several $20 bills. He said he left the bills in his wallet until the next day, and when he went to pay for a purchase at a convenience store, the clerk refused to accept the money. Deputies said the bills appeared to be counterfeit because the print was not clear and the paper was very thin.
A Palm Coast resident reported his debit card had been fraudulently used after he lost it on Valentine’s Day. The victim told deputies he may have dropped the card in a convenience store parking lot. He was notified by the bank that there were six charges on the card, including charges made at Walmart and Pizza Hut.
+ S-section sidewalk sooner than planned?
Following two traffic fatalities in the last three months of 2011, residents of Seminole Woods have been pleading Palm Coast officials for a sidewalk. That wish might be granted sooner than originally planned, City Manager Jim Landon said Friday.
In a follow-up interview from discussions at the Feb. 14 Palm Coast City Council workshop, Landon said city engineers can do the design for the path in-house, which would save money and could speed up the process.
The first phase of the path would stretch from Utah Place, north to State Road 100, Landon said. Then, residential roads could be used up until the pond between Ulaturn Trail and Universal Trail. The next phase would connect the path to Universal Trail.
Most of the work would be done by city crews, and then a company would have to come in and lay the asphalt, Landon said. He said the engineering department has been asked to add this project to its work plan.
City officials have repeatedly said a Seminole Woods path is next on the city’s master plan, but federal grant dollars have dried up, and so the project will take longer than anticipated. However, if the city can do the design work, smaller grants might suffice, Landon said.
“If we can get it designed, we can use those smaller grants just for construction,” Landon said.
Landon did confirm that while this project is moving forward, it isn’t going to be finished in the immediate future.
“We’re trying to stay within our means and do it with in-house resources,” Landon said.
