The stabbing and killing of a dog Feb. 12 on a Palm Coast street has drawn nationwide attention. A petition created by an Albuquerque animal rights group is nearing its goal of 3,000 online signatures to say that the suspect, Sahmi Green, should receive the maximum possible penalty for the crime.
Green has been charged with animal cruelty, a third-degree felony. Read the full story here: (Man faces charges for stabbing dog to death in Palm Coast). He is currently being held at the Flagler County Inmate Facility and is facing other charges, as well: resisting arrest without violence, trespass after warning, battery, grand theft, use of anti-shoplifting devices, and resisting a merchant.
The group, Hands 4Paws, posts stories of animal cruelty on its website, including these headlines and petitions:
"Justice for 3 Chihuahua Pups"
"Stop the automatic kill policy on Pit Bulls"
"Memphis Animal Services, DO NOT euthanize ALL pit bulls w/out putting them up for adoption, Spay/Neuter & work w/rescues to SAVE them"
"STOP DOG FIGHTING IN INDONESIA"
"Saks Fifth Avenue-Stop selling animal fur"
The petition states: "Intentional animal cruelty in Florida is a third degree felony, with a fine up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment up to five years. Please take a stand against animal abuse and help bring justice for the gray female pit bull that was so brutally killed. This petition respectfully requests that if found guilty, Sahmi Green receive the maximum sentence for animal cruelty and other charges."
Among the people listed on the petition are names from as far away as Hawaii, New York, Ohio and Arizona.
