The Flagler/Palm Coast Kiwanis Club granted Swine Scholarships this year to Megan Murphy, a senior at Flagler Palm Coast High School, and to Colleen Derrig and Matthew Moser, of Buddy Taylor Middle School. They are all members of the FFA, Future Farmers of America of Flagler County.

Each student was required to complete an application with an essay and submit it to the Swine Project Scholarship Committee.

The Kiwanis chairperson for this project, Joe Wright, believes that this is a unique learning opportunity for the students as they take on the responsibility of caring for their animals, engage in problem solving, record keeping and developing marketing skills.

The scholarships will be used by the students to help fund the raising of their hogs, to compete in the Market Swine Division of the Flagler County Fair and Youth Show, which will be held the first week of April.

They each purchased a hog, which they are then required to feed and care for at the agriculture facilities, at Buddy Taylor Middle School.

The hogs are required to reach a certain weight in order to be entered into competition at the fair. This project, under the supervision of teachers R.D. Davis, at Buddy Talor, and Johanna Davis, at FPC, requires the students to provide appropriate feed and medical care, proper exercise and training and to fulfill all the responsibilities required to exhibit their hogs in the fair.
