The School Board added black to its uniform policy.
At the request of Flagler County School Board member Andy Dance, and the suggestion of a parent at the Feb. 7 meeting who urged the board to add a color to its uniform policy in consideration of the district’s “girly girls,” black was added as an acceptable district shirt or over-garment color, in addition to the white and gray already approved.
Each school principal is also permitted to choose up to two school-specific colors to add to the district’s three allowable hues. Certain principals, such as Nancy Willis, of Old Kings Elementary, though, will opt for only one additional option, in an effort to increase the uniformity in her campus’ uniform policy.
The board decided that school ID cards will also still be required on Flagler campuses.
School still out Thanksgiving week
School will start about a week earlier this year for Flagler County students, according to the 2012-2013 calendar approved by the School Board at its Feb. 7 meeting.
The entirety of Thanksgiving week will still be off, and winter break will be one day longer, although classes are set to resume the day after the first of the year.
“We’re working backward from end-of-course exams,” Dance explained during the meeting. “And we want kids back in school as soon as possible after the break. … For the benefit of the testing, that’s how that worked out.”
Superintendent Janet Valentine added that the decision for earlier start times was also influenced by the instatement of tougher FCAT cut scores (see Page 1 for that story). The sooner students return to school, she said, the more time they will have to prepare for testing.
HERITAGE TO BE HEARD
Rather than allowing the issue to go to a state judge, the School Board decided Feb. 7 to hear an appeal from the Heritage Academy charter school, which was voted to be terminated Jan. 17.
“We will actually be putting on a full-blown hearing,” said School Board Attorney Kristy Gavin, adding that witnesses must be present during the proceedings.
The hearing will take place 9:30 a.m. March 13, and will be open to the public, although comment will not be allowed.
