The annual George Washington Carver Community Center online auction fundraiser has begun.

The second-annual online auction to raise funds for the development and promotion of the George Washington Carver Community Center, in Bunnell, kicked off April 9 and runs to May 17.

Aiming to top last year’s collection of more than $5,000, Flagler County Board of County Commission Chairwoman Barbara Revels, who leads the fundraiser, hopes to collect more than $6,000 this year, thanks to about 60 items currently up for bid.

Funds from last year’s event were partially used to purchase furniture and sponsor a sports team, according to Revels, but most of the rest was saved to insulate the center.

“The reason we are holding on hard to the funds is the insulation cost alone is nearly $40,000,” she said. “Our fundraising and grants to date have us nearly halfway there. We also have had some generous personal donations from individuals and foundations that were unsolicited and truly awesome.”

Donations for auction items are also still being accepted, Revels added. “So we want to encourage people to check the website regularly — on their bids and on new items that get added.”

The site is maintained by Cheryl Massaro, youth center director.Call 586-5136. To bid, visit www.carverfoundation.org/auction.
