After neighbors heard a child crying in a locked porch for two hours on the morning of April 21, on South Daytona Avenue, they called the Flagler Beach Police Department, leading to an arrest on charges of neglect and drug possession.

With the help of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, the child was removed from the porch, according to the police report. Then, a white female opened the door and appeared to have just woken up.

The officers asked the woman, Alicia Rutherford, why she hadn’t responded to the neighbors, who had been knocking on her door. She said she was going to the bathroom.

The officer noticed a green leaf-like substance on a bookshelf in the mobile home, and Rutherford was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana less than 20 grams, in addition to child neglect.

Rutherford’s mother accepted custody of the child.
