Improvements to the River to Sea Preserve, located on State Road A1A, at Marineland, were approved by the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners Monday, April 16, totaling $250,000.
The project is funded 80% through a Florida Department of Transportation grant, secured by the National Scenic Byways Program.
“This is an ongoing project,” said Deputy County Administrator Sally Sherman. “As we find funds available with FDOT, we go back and find enhancements that would improve the park.”
As part of an overall park expansion, the enhancement project includes improvements such as the construction of a paved driveway apron, entry signage, landscaping, construction of two unpaved parking spaces, sidewalk improvements and trail markers.
The county will contribute $50,000 toward this project.

In preparation of fire season, the County Commission also approved the purchase of $607,860 of emergency equipment, 80% of which will be paid for through an Assistance to Firefighters grant.
Contributing $121,572 of county funds to the project, monies will be used to replace 15 soon-to-be discontinued heart monitor/defibrillators in life-support vehicles. The county’s share of the purchase order came from a total of $209,000 budgeted in this year’s Fire Rescue expense projections, in case the grant was not approved.
The commission also approved a three-year contract with Space Coast Fire and Safety Inc., for fire and security alarms, sprinklers and extinguishing system services at government facilities. The deal includes an annual cost of $21,575.20, with a five-year inspection cost of $8,150.
Three sealed bids were received March 28 for the contract.
