Residents were allowed to return to their homes around 6 p.m. as Flagler County firefighters brought the bush fire under control in the West Flagler County subdivision of Daytona North.

Several blocks were involved in the fire just south of Hidden Trails Community Park. One garage was destroyed but no reports of injuries. Residents were offered shelter at the Westside Baptist Church at 3559 Canal Ave., Daytona North. A total of 15 homes were evacuated.

Flagler County Fire Rescue Chief Don Petito said shifting wind directions are made the fire extremely difficult to control. The area affected is between Mahogany and Walnut just south of the Hidden Trails Park. Chief Petito estimated the fire to be about 4.5 acres.

Assistance provided to bring the blaze under control included: a Strike Team from Volusia County, the Forestry Service and Flagler County’s FireFlight helicopter in addition to Flagler County fire personnel.

A witness from the scene said firefighters left the area at about 9:30 p.m.
