Flagler County firefighters are evacuating residents in the west county subdivision of Daytona North as they battle a brush fire in that encompasses several blocks of the neighborhood.

Flagler County firefighters and the Florida Division of Forestry responded to the report of a brush fire on Holly Lane around 2:16 p.m. The fire was under control as of 4:14 p.m.

One garage was destroyed, but there are no reports of injuries at this time. A shelter for the residents has been set up at the Westside Baptist Church at 3559 Canal Ave., Daytona North. A total of 15 homes have been evacuated.

Flagler County Fire Rescue Chief Don Petito said shifting wind directions are making the fire extremely difficult to control. The area affected is between Mahogany and Walnut just south of the Hidden Trails Park. Chief Petito said the fire is at least 3 acres at this point and is not yet under control.

Flagler County has called for a Strike Team from Volusia County to assist in the fire and the Forestry Service and Flagler County’s FireFlight helicopter are on the scene in addition to Flagler County fire personnel.

Motorist should expect traffic in that area to be interrupted as firefighters continue to extinguish the fire and determine its cause.
