A grant application will be sent to the state to fund Flagler County’s 11th artificial reef.
The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners agreed to submit a $60,000 grant application for artificial reef construction March 23, to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. If the grant is approved, the St. Augustine Waterway and Port Project has also agreed to contribute $25,000.
According to Amy Kennedy, county project engineer, if this project goes through, the reef will be deployed about 10 miles off the Marineland coast, marking the 11th reef Flagler County has deployed since starting the initiative in the early 1990s.
All of the deployed reefs have been built and installed through wildlife commission grants and fishing license revenue.
The Grady Prather Reef was the last deployed by Flagler, in July 2011.
County applies for library computers grant
A $34,603 grant submission to the Florida Division of Library and Information Service was approved by the County Commission April 3, for the replacement of 29 public-use computers and the addition of four new computers and upgraded word processing software, at all county libraries.
“’Tis the season to apply for grants,” County Administrator Craig Coffey said, referring to another three grant applications up for approval at the April 3 meeting.
The library grant also requires a local funding match of at least one-third the awarded amount; however, a community with rural status may request a waiver of the match, which Flagler will be granted, based on its Rural Economic Development Initiative status.
If approved, funding will not be granted until next fiscal year, Communications Manager Carl Laundrie said. Approvals will be announced in September.
In the same meeting, the commission also proclaimed April 8 through April 14 National Library Week.
