As a tray of muffins was passed around Monday, Sept. 12, preschool students at St. Marks by the Sea Day School picked out the perfect pastry to give to their grandparents.

Grandparents were invited to have lunch with grandchildren in celebration of Grandparents Day. Members of the congregation at St. Marks by the Sea Lutheran Church acted as adopted grandparents for students whose grandparents were unable to attend.

The first official observance of Grandparents Day was Sept. 9, 1979.

Rosie Flinn, 4, who lives with her mother and grandmother, said she was excited to make cards and eat lunch with her grandmother.

In 2009, the census reported that 6.7 million children younger than 18 lived with their grandparents.
