At one minute past 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, the line of families was spilling into the parking lot at First Church of Palm Coast.

For the last one-and-one-half years, the church’s Women’s Missionary Society has been supplying families in need with groceries once a month. Every second Saturday of the month, the group donates food to about 60 families, with quantities determined by the number of family members. To receive food, all adults must bring identification.

Each family is supplied the basics of rice, cereal, soup, pasta, juice and canned meats.

“We have found out that in Flagler County there are so many people who are out of work; the need is tremendous for it,” said Mattie DeVore, president of the Women’s Missionary Society.

The society also holds a clothing giveaway every three months.

So far, all donations have come from the congregation at First Church; however, DeVore said she would love for the general public to get involved. Food donations can be brought to the church, 91 Old Kings Road N.
