Sgt. Frank Celico joined the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office in May 2000.

Sgt. Frank Celico, who joined the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office in 2000, died Sept. 9, of natural causes yet to be determined. He was 33.

“The community and this agency have lost a dedicated professional,” said Flagler County Sheriff Donald W. Fleming. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

Celico was assigned to Charlie Squad Road Patrol and was supervisor of the Bicycle Squad. He also enjoyed teaching bicycle safety to children; Celico was single and had no children.

“He was the type of person who touched everybody’s life in this community — good, bad or indifferent,” said Sgt. Louis Miceli, who knew Celico for 10 years. “Even when he had to do his job and arrest somebody, people respected him. … I have yet to meet a person who had anything bad to say about Frank.”

Dep. Kevin Byrne added: “He was the kind of guy who loved to live life and would do anything for anybody. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it.”

Byrne and Miceli were two in a group of motorcycle enthusiasts led by Celico. The group was called the Never Too Far Riders, a joke about Celico’s preference to ride to local restaurants rather than head out on the highway for long cruises. Miceli said the farthest the group ever rode was St. Augustline.

Miceli rode with Celico Sept. 7 to look at a new car in Daytona Beach. It was the last time anyone in the group would ride with him.

They had planned to join thousands of other riders for the 9/11 ride at the Flagler County Government Services Building.

“But, with Frankie passing on Friday, nobody was up to it,” Miceli said. “We’re going to set up a ride in the near future.”

That ride will be in keeping with the Not Too Far Riders and likely will consist of a trip to Flagler Beach.

Just the way Celico would have liked it.
