In front of a small Dunkin’ Donuts on Old Kings Road, a sign attached to a white support poll reads: “Reserved for Sgt. Frank Celico.”

Inside, a picture of the Flagler County Sheriff's Office veteran smiling, holding up his coffee, flashing a “thumbs up,” stands on the counter near the cash register.

Celico died Sept. 9 of natural causes at the age of 33, but his legacy at the coffee shop lives on.
Employees of the Dunkin’ Donuts have gotten a petition, complete with approximately 800 signatures, to support changing the name of a nearby road to continue remembering Celico, their customer and public servant.

Kings Way is a short road that splits two sides of the shopping center. On the south side is a Wendy’s and a KFC. The Old Kings Commons Shopping Center is on the north.

The petition supports changing Kings Way to Celico Way, and was given to Palm Coast City Councilman Frank Meeker to present to the council.

It’s been discussed at meetings for the past few weeks.

At the Tuesday, Nov. 15 meeting, City Manager Jim Landon said city staff has gotten feedback from the two businesses whose addresses are on Kings Way.

One business, the Denny’s restaurant, has submitted the proposal to its corporate headquarters, Landon said. It does appear that representatives at the Denny’s are OK with the change. However, the Grand Hong Kong Asian Bistro would prefer the street name remain unchanged, said Ray Tyner, planning manager for Palm Coast.

Because the road was granted public access, the City Council could change the name of the road on its own, Tyner said.

No final decision has been made.
