Florida Hospital Flagler hosted a fundraising ‘State of the Hospital’ dinner reception May 19. The goal of the new 20/20 Society: raise $1 million by the year 2020.

At Florida Hospital Flagler’s first “State of the Hospital” 20/20 Society dinner reception, more than guests were asked to stand and be recognized. Each was a society member and had made a pledge to donate at least $10,000 over a 10-year period to the hospital foundation, in support of its goal to raise $1 million by the year 2020.

Employing 875 people — 75% of whom live in the county — Florida Hospital Flagler brings in $140 million a year and is the third largest business in Flagler County. But it is also a nonprofit.

According to hospital CEO David Ottati, the hospital is limited by law and its mission on how much yearly funds it can spend. Whatever profits are made must be reinvested back into programs and services; when those funds fall short, the foundation steps in.

According to 20/20 Society brainchild John Subers, if the group can organize 100 members to pledge a $1,000 each per year, all foundation overhead would be covered. After that, every penny raised is spent on people.

Since October, 20/20 has raised $236,000. Some of the programs already funded by philanthropic activity include a HospiceCare unit, the Judith C Macko Cancer Resource Library, a second cardiac catheterization lab and the Cancer Institute.

Other hospital additions/expansions include 200 newly constructed parking spaces as well as “world-class” new machinery — such as the da Vinci Surgical System, a doctor-controlled minimally invasive surgery-bot, and the PET-CT 600, a rare and advanced medical scanner.

The hospital also has plans to expand onto Palm Coast Parkway, erecting an outpatient medical center by mid-2012, in Cobblestone Village.

Much of the space of the hospital’s current 100-acre property has been cleared, as well, to prepare the land for future projects.

“When you donate, what you’re really doing is helping the community ... and touching folks’ lives,” Ottati said.
