Jeannie Sousa Washington, a 1996 graduate of St. Joseph’s Academy, in St. Augustine, was awarded the 2010 GEICO Military Service Award. She and her parents, Nina and Joe Sousa, and brother, Mark, moved to Palm Coast in 1986.

Master Sgt. Washington is assigned to the 15th Medical Operations Squadron, Hickman Air Force Base, Hawaii.

Washington enhanced alcohol and child abuse awareness of more than 9,000 community members by directing the partnership among five military installations, 10 Department of Defense helping agencies and a local school, in support of Red Ribbon Week and the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam Abuse Awareness Month. Her leadership contributed to Team Hickam being awarded a $950,000 federal grant to partner with state and local agencies to reduce underage drinking, resulting in a 60% decrease.
