If you were cruising around Flagler County roads on Wednesday, you might have noticed the high volume of Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies on the road. That's because the FCSO is increasing its enforcement of the use of safety belts for the next two weeks.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is joining with the Florida Department of Transportation to participate in the “Click It or Ticket” enforcement campaign, taking place now until March 31.

The statewide campaign kicked off Tuesday, March 15. Motorists are reminded to be sure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seat belt. The fine for not wearing a seat belt is $116.

“Flagler County motorists usually buckle up when they are traveling our local roadways,” Sheriff Donald Fleming said Wednesday in a statement. “We estimate that we have about an 81% compliance with the law, but we have noticed an increase in the amount of crash-related injuries. Most of the injured were not wearing seat belts.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2008, seat belts saved more than 13,000 lives nationwide. From 2004 to 2008, seat belts saved more than 75,000 lives.
