Flagler County’s Department of Juvenile Justice Community Garden Advisory Council was presented a 2011 Daily Point of Light Award.

The award honors individuals and groups creating meaningful change in communities across America.

Since the inception of the garden two years ago, volunteers have helped to feed Flagler’s hungry. Fresh garden vegetables and fruit are harvested seasonally and donated to food pantries for distribution.

Every year, the need for local social assistance has increased, and so has the production of the garden.

The garden has support from the Flagler County DJJ Council, the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners and the Flagler County School Board.

“It truly does take a village to evoke positive change, as well as the commitment and vision of the garden’s Advisory Council, keeping the garden headed on the right track,” said Cheryl Massaro, director of the Flagler County Youth Center.
