The Coast Guard has called off a search off Flagler County’s coast after searching for a possible downed airplane, an official said Wednesday.

The Coast Guard was called in to assist in a search around midnight Tuesday after witnesses claimed to see a red, fiery object fall from the sky into the Atlantic Ocean. The search was several miles off Flagler’s coast.

The search was called off around 8:35 a.m. Wednesday, according to Coast Guard petty officer Jessica Potter.

Potter said the search was called off nearly 12 hours later “due to all negative results in search patterns and lack of evidence supporting an actual plane had gone down.”
