Flagler firefighters busy with new wildfires

The following is adapted from a Flagler County release:

Wildfires are still causing concerns in Flagler County, where 10 new fires have consumed more than 70 acres, and two previous fires are active again as a result of July 25 lightning strikes.

The National Weather Service is predicting a 40% chance of afternoon showers for Flagler County today. According to the National Weather Service, by Wednesday there is a 50% chance of showers that may bring relief. The Division of Forestry’s drought index for Flagler County has climbed to 414 as conditions continued to dry out over the past week.

Flagler County Fire Rescue Chief Don Petito warns residents that just because the county received some rainfall, it doesn’t mean that everything is back to normal. In fact, Flagler County’s biggest fire, the Espanola fire, which consumed 5,136 acres, is once again active. Also, the Opossum fire is active again.

The new fires are as follows:

Roy Road is 36.5 acres.
John Campbell No. 5 is 4.25 acres.
Dinner Island No. 1 is 10 acres.
Dinner Island No. 2 is 2 acres.
Dinner Island No. 3 is 1 acre.
Dinner Island No. 4 is 9 acres.
E. Black Point Road is 1/10 of an acre.
Rima Ridge fire is 5 acres.
County Road 305 fire is 2 acres.
Treatment plant fire is 2.5 acres.
