+ Gator snaps up low fuel prices at Flagler airport
This small alligator (right) was photographed June 28 when he stopped by for a fill up at the Flagler County Airport.

County Airport Director Roy Sieger said the gator had probably heard that Flagler County is offering fuel prices that are lower than the average of all fuel prices in the region, in most cases by 50 cents a gallon or more.

The gator was safely taxied back to his habitat.

+ Palm Harbor Academy adds pre-school program
The Flagler County School Board unanimously approved the addition of a preschool program at Palm Harbor Academy, kindergarten through sixth grade, at a June 30 meeting.

Palm Harbor Charter School was established in 2009, and this addition was incorporated to allow for the inclusion of younger siblings of currently enrolled students to attend with their family members.

The program is planned to begin in the 2011-2012 school year. It will have no affect on state enrollment funds.

+ Home-instruction pay set at $25 per hour, plus mileage
A standard pay scale for Flagler County home instruction was formalized in a June 30 meeting of the Flagler County School Board meeting.

The board unanimously approved formalizing the pay scale for home instruction — which currently includes 12 students taught at home due to disruptive behavior, 11 for medical purposes and one for academic reason — from a sliding scale of $22 to $61.69, to a flat rate of $25, plus mileage.

+ Homeless 2 Homeward offers assistance to students
Flagler County Rotary is working with Flagler County Public Schools to keep or place families in homes without social service intervention. The goal is to keep children in school and to provide basic needs to families.

Homeless 2 Homeward is a one-time service that provides rental, utility and emergency food assistance. It also provides direction for counseling services, housing information and clothing for children with the Flagler County Education Education’s S.T.U.F.F. BUS.families.

Homeless youth are defined as individuals who lack a permanent residence — including those living in motels, trailer parks, camp grounds, transitional housing and foster care.

To be eligible for assistance, families must have a child enrolled in a local school, be a Flagler resident, complete a form and make an appointment with Flagler Student Services, where they can receive assistance finding and applying for services like Medicaid, food stamps, mental health services, emergency food and Section 8 Housing.

Donations are tax deductible and can be made to the foundation (memo line: Homeless 2 Homeward).

+ U.S. Rep. John Mica applauds SunRail decision
Gov. Rick Scott’s approval for the SunRail passenger rail project signals jobs and improved transportation for Florida’s future, according to a press release sent by the office of U.S. Rep. John Mica, who serves Flagler County.

“I commend the governor for moving forward and joining with local and federal partners in approving this transportation milestone,” Mica said. “This is as significant for the state as when Henry Flagler brought the railroad to Florida and when President Eisenhower initiated the Interstate. This transportation alternative offers the only real cost-effective, near-term solution for our region’s highway congestion and will have tremendous benefits for employment.”
