After a week of heavy rainfall, the list of fires considered active by the Division of Forestry in Flagler County has dropped to three. The number of firefighters on duty has also dropped.

The Espanola fire, the Opossum Lane fire and the Roy Road fire are the only three that remain out of more than 53 fires that were active at one point or another in the past two months.

The Espanola Fire, north of State Road 100 and about six miles west of U.S. 1, remains at 5,136 acres and is still 70% contained — as it has for about a month. The Opossum Lane fire is west of County Road 13 and the Flagler County Recreation Area. It is still about 20 acres and is 100% contained. The Roy Road Fire is five acres, and is located in a remote northwest area of the county, and is contained.

“Flagler County is extremely grateful for all the assistance (we’ve) received to fight the fires,” County Administrator Craig Coffey said. “We appreciate all the effort and coordination by all the agencies working together to save lives and property.”

The DOF Gold Team is now down to about 40 individuals. Two weeks ago, the agency supplied more than 220 firefighters. The team has relocated from the Flagler County Emergency Operations Center to division headquarters on U.S. 1, north of Bunnell.
