The Flagler County Chamber of Commerce & Affiliates wants a greater role in economic development. Calling for a two-day summit is the organization’s first step in its “Leading the Way” campaign.

When thinking about economic development, quite a few things come to mind: Enterprise Flagler, the County Commission, the City Council, sales tax.

The Flagler County Chamber of Commerce & Affiliates wants to have a larger role and has launched a campaign called “Leading the Way.”

The chamber’s board of directors passed a Dec. 22 resolution calling for a two-day economic development summit. There hasn’t been an official date set, but elected officials could decide on a date at the Jan. 31 intergovernmental meeting.

Lea Stokes, incoming chairwoman of the board of directors of the chamber, said it’s the chamber’s responsibility to lead the way and to insist government leaders come together and devise a strategic plan for the county.

Doug Baxter, president of the chamber, said it’s important to know that the chamber supports a dedicated funding stream for economic development in the county.

Stokes said the focus should also be collaboration among all the county’s entities.

“If everyone doesn’t get in the same sand box and play nice, it’s not going to work,” she said. “ … This is a challenge, but I think it’s an opportunity. (The chamber) will be a willing and helpful partner. We will also be a very assertive voice for our business members to make sure that what’s happening is what’s in the best interest for our business community so that they can … enjoy greater success.”

Added Baxter: “We need to lead the way. This is our first step of many.”
