Matanzas rallied with three straight pins, but Flagler Palm Coast won for the second time in two years.

It all came down to the heavyweights Friday, Dec. 9, at Flagler Palm Coast High School in the crosstown wrestling matchup between FPC and Matanzas high schools.

Down 36-18 with three weight classes to go, Matanzas got pins from Jason Cowles, Tony Mendez and Steven Mosley to tie the meet at 36 points apiece.

The teams performed so evenly that it came down to the eighth tiebreaker to determined FPC won the meet, 37-36, on scoring criteria for the most number of matches scoring the first points.

Matanzas had to forfeit two matches because of injuries. That put FPC over the top.

FPC coach Bobby Bossardet said he is impressed with how his young team is wrestling. FPC lost 10 seniors from last year’s team, and is starting 10 freshmen and sophomores.

Conversely, Matanzas is starting seven seniors.

“Our wrestlers are determined to make an impact this year,” Bossardet said. “I think they proved that Friday night. We have a great group of kids this year who are focused on developing each week into becoming champions.”

Only two wrestlers on FPC’s team came into the season with varsity experience, Bossardet said.

Matanzas coach John White said after the meet, he told his team he was proud of how hard they fought.

“They wrestled hard, they wrestled tough,” White said. “They are trying. They are getting out there and they are getting after it, and that’s all I can ask.”

White said the Flagler Duals kicks off the tough part of the season for the Pirates.

“For the remainder of the season, our goal is to continue pushing through the tournament-style wrestling,” White said, adding that he hopes to qualify the seven starting seniors for the state tournament.
