A sign above Old Kings Road will say both Kings Way and Celico Way, in honor of Sgt. Frank Celico.
There were three proposed solutions, but the Palm Coast City Council decided on a fourth alternative to renaming a Palm Coast road to honor Flagler County Sheriff’s Sgt. Frank Celico, who died in September.
The City Council, at its Dec. 13 workshop, agreed to rename the eastern segment of Kings Way to Celico Way. There are no businesses along this stretch of road other than the Shell gas station.
Employees of the Dunkin’ Donuts coffee shop, located inside the gas station, spearheaded a petition to change the name of the road to honor Celico, who was 33 when he died, of natural causes.
City Councilman Frank Meeker, who frequents the coffee shop, was presented with the petition, with 700 signatures, a couple of months ago.
There are two businesses with a Kings Way address — Denny’s restaurant and the Grand Hong Kong Asian Bistro.
According to City Manager Jim Landon, Denny’s submitted the idea of the name change to its corporate headquarters, but never heard back. The Grand Hong Kong Asian Bistro was against the name change, citing recent advertising costs for materials that include the current address.
Three options were presented Tuesday to the council.
The first option was to officially change the name of the road from Kings Way to Celico Way.
The second option was to leave the road as Kings Way. The final option was to “co-designate” the road, meaning the large text on the road sign would say “Kings Way,” while smaller letters would say “Celico Way.”
Meeker said Tuesday that a fourth option would be to rename the eastern segment of the road to Celico Way, and keep the portion that has the two businesses as Kings Way.
“It’s up to us to decide if we want to do something special in (Celico’s) memory or not,” Meeker said.
City Councilman Bill Lewis said Meeker’s concept was a “win/win for everyone.”
City Councilman Bill McGuire said he didn’t want council to set a precedent that “opens the floodgates” to changing street names.
McGuire also asked if this has been done before on city roads.
According to Mayor Jon Netts, two residential street names in the S-section were changed to accommodate a request by a cultural group.
Though no formal vote was taken, council agreed to Option 4. A formal resolution and presentation will take place at the Dec. 20 Palm Coast City Council meeting.
