Poles supporting power lines in Palm Coast are in the middle of an upgrade. Four Florida Power and Light trucks were working on replacing a pole near the intersection of Palm Coast Parkway and Pine Lakes Parkway the afternoon of Monday, Dec. 5.

According FPL Senior Line Specialist T.J. Barrett, the poles are being replaced near Old Kings Road, as well. In fact, FPL is working on replacing poles statewide.

The new poles are 40 feet tall, including 6.5 feet underground. They are 14 inches in diameter, up from 11 inches with the old poles.

"We're hardening the system, upgrading the poles to ... withstand greater wind strength," Barrett said.

The crew that was working on the pole Monday afternoon had to cover the lines for protection first.

"Everything's hot up there," Barrett said. That makes it more dangerous but, he said, as a result there were no power outtages, other than one store after hours.

Each of the four power lines on the pole, he added, carried 23,000 volts of electricity.
