The following is an adapted press release from Flagler County:
The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners and the Flagler County School Board will meet in a workshop session to discuss adjusting voting districts based on the results of the 2010 U.S. Census. The meeting, which is open to the public, will be 4 p.m. Aug. 16, at the Government Services Building, 1769 E. Moody Blvd., Bunnell.
The two entities will go over the rules of redistricting, review six proposed plans and, according to the agenda, eliminate three of the plans and rank the remaining three proposed plans.
(To read about the city of Palm Coast's recent redistricting, click here.)
Both the School Board and the County Commission share the same districts, and members of both boards are elected by a countywide vote. The districts ensure representation from a geographical cross-section of the county.
State law requires the districts be adjusted to keep the populations in each district as balanced as possible. The districts are also to be kept compact and avoid odd shapes and splitting cities and neighborhoods.
Although the five County Commission districts and five School Board districts share the same boundaries, they are numbered differently. There is a proposal to adjust the numbering so school and county districts are numbered the same.
All six plans keep the current elected officials in the district they were elected from. The plans are available for review on Flagler County’s website at www.flaglercounty.org/red and click on “agenda backup.”
The three remaining plans will be presented to the public for comment again at the Sept. 6 Flagler County School Board Meeting and the Sept. 7 County Commission meeting. A joint meeting of both entities is proposed for Sept. 21 for final adoption of a redistricting plan and renumbering of the districts.
