About a dozen members of the Flagler County Democratic Party gathered for a protest the second week in a row Aug. 2, in front of the SunTrust building on Florida Park Drive and Palm Coast Parkway, where U.S. Rep. John Mica has an office.

Party member Mamie Godfrey said it was significant to see the activity in Palm Coast.

“Palm Coast is a melting pot,” she said. “People came here from across the country. They want to enjoy their retirement, but they don’t want to help the ones coming afterward.”

Many Palm Coast residents have called for tax cuts, mirroring the calls for tax cuts nationwide, and Godfrey fears that could have a negative impact on the country. Godfrey and her husband are retired New York City employees.

“We always encouraged our kids to give back and work in government, and I want them to have the same opportunities I did,” she said. Her children are teachers, social workers and victim advocates, she said.

Resident Steve Levy helped raise signs and stood with the others on the street corner in the rain.

He opposes cuts to Social Security, saying he worked for government for 35 years and paid more than $80,000 into Social Security.

“Now that I’m getting it back, they want to cut it off,” he said. “They’re not honoring the deal … We could pay for everything if we taxed the businesses like we tax the people.”

Debbie Coffey agreed. She said her daughter has paid into Social Security for 30 years and if a particular plan were to go through in the U.S. Congress, her daughter would only receive $6,000 per year — in 25 years.

Geraldine Hochman, of www.MoveOn.org, said the deal on the debt crisis was nothing but “hoopla.”
