State transportation officials have canceled the Flagler Beach sea wall project.

County Administrator Craig Coffey announced Monday, April 18, that he has received word from George Lovett, of the Florida Department of Transportation, that FDOT is pulling out of the Flagler Beach sea wall project.

“(They’re) going to be withdrawing the project for now,” Coffey said “… putting the project on hold.”

Regardless of whether this postponement ultimately leads to a full cancellation, Coffey said, “(right now) it means they’re not building … It’s a non-issue.”

That gives the county and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers more time to conduct its beach study, focusing on wall options and potential impact to regional beaches, wildlife and the surrounding tourism economy.

In light of the postponement, Coffey suggested withholding the letter the county was preparing to send in opposition of the wall. Instead, the County Commission will send a thank-you letter to FDOT.

Flagler Health Department revises fees, adds services
A complete list of Flagler County Health Department fees and services has been revised for the first time since 2007 by the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners, Monday, April 18. Additional state fees may apply.

Changes will take effect in about two weeks, according to Patrick Johnson, Health Department administrator. “We wanted to make our prices comparable to surrounding counties’,” he said. “That was our main goal.”

Although most changes are minor, several new services have been added in the environmental health category. Water-well construction fees and services have been incorporated, as well as items in food hygiene, drinking water and on-site storage.

Other revised services include pregnancy tests, which were $10 but will now be priced on a sliding scale; certificates of immunization replacement copies were free but will now be $5 each; herpes culture screenings have been added, for $25; and provider sexually transmitted disease tests have been priced up from $25 to $50.
