The Annual Carter Family Reunion, for descendants of David Carter and his wife; Rachel Cooper, through their three children: Rachel Carter and husband, Rev. James Middleton; Sara Jane Carter and husband Rev. William Henry Parker Jr.; George W. Carter and wife Keziah Grooms, will be held 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 10, at the St. Augustine South Improvement Association building, 709 Royal Road, St. Augustine.

George W. Carter was born April 29, 1817, in Tattnall County Ga. He drove his cattle to Florida hunting for more and better pasture around 1848. Carter moved his large family to several locations before founding the community of Carterville, St. Johns County. Carter was the postmaster for Carterville when the King’s Highway was just a dirt track through the woods.

The Carter family has been holding reunions for over 80 years with the first ones being held at the Carterville Methodist Church.

The family historian, Mary Ketus Deen Holland, born Nov. 24, 1917 in Bunnell, died in St Augustine Feb. 11, 2009, was a descendant of George Carter. She wrote several historical books including “Our Heritage,” “First Families of Flagler” and “Bunnell High School 1917-1967.”
