Reef Myers, of Holly Hill, has been charged in grand theft and dealing in stolen property in the theft of air conditioner coils from Haynes Brothers Furniture, 387 S. Yonge St. He had been sought by police, who issued a press release Oct. 30 asking for public assistance in locating Myers. The suspect later turned himself in at Volusia County Branch Jail.
Myers, a registered sex offender, was identified by an employee of John’s Scrap Metals, in Bunnell, who said that, on Oct. 5, Myers brought in 101 pounds of aluminum coils and was paid $55.55. He came back Oct. 8 and received $185.15 for 161 more pounds of coils.
The employees said the coils were commercial-sized and were not from a window air conditioner.
The employee also said that the suspect had three hand-written notes, signed with three different names, that gave Myers the OK to possess and sell the coils. The police officer inspected the notes and wrote in his report that all three appeared to be written by the same person. He called the numbers on the notes and all had been disconnected.
The police questioned Carrie Brown, of Ormond Beach, who had been seen with Myers at a scrap yard when he was attempting to sell metal. After taking a handwriting sample from Brown, they noticed that it was similar to the notes presented at the scrap yard. Brown denied writing the notes but admitted that two of the names on the notes were her sister and daughter.
The police later contacted Myers and asked him about the notes, to which he responded that he didn’t know who wrote the letters but that they were given to him by Brown. He said he didn’t know the coils were stolen.
The police showed the photos taken at the scrap yard to the air conditioner service man for Haynes Furniture, who stated they matched the coils that were taken.
Police then obtained a warrant for Myers’ arrest, and Myers turned himself in to the Volusia County Branch Jail.
