The Constellation Furyk & Friends PGA Tour Champions Event is right around the corner at the Hammock Beach Golf Resort & Spa. The resort is working in conjunction with the tournament director to make big changes in preparation for the event which is being held Oct. 5-11.
“The resort brings the best of everything, world-class golf, world-class amenities, and we're going to bring some of the best players that have ever played the game here to compete on the Ocean Course,” said Adam Renfroe, Constellation Furyk & Friends tournament director. “Right now, our buildout is going on and what that means is our hospitality is being constructed from the ground up. We'll have to outfit those with furniture, with food and beverage, with televisions, and restrooms to support our fans.”
The hospitality section will especially focus on holes 16 through 18. Among the interactive fan destinations are the Constellation Power Putt where ticket holders can participate in a hands-on putting experience. Also, the Wolfson’s Children Hospital Family Lounge is the only lounge with AC and has activities for kids, and nursing and changing stations. Another featured suite is the Patriot Suite especially for active military and veterans to relax and enjoy the event.
Probably one of the biggest highlights of the hospitality buildout is the boardwalk built on the Champions Event Lawn which connects many of the private and public suites and lounges where there will be mounted HDTVs, college football, food and beverages, and much more for attendees of all ages. The boardwalk will also host the Friday night concert from Country music artist Billy Currington on Oct. 9, where they are expecting 5,000 to 6,000 to be in attendance.
“The exciting surprise has been how amazing the buildout looks on this golf course in this setting right here by the ocean,” Renfroe said.
The planning and preparation for the buildout has been heavily coordinated.
“To be able to host the Furyk & Friends tournament is a huge honor for this property,” said Brad Hauer, general manager of Hammock Beach Golf Resort & Spa. “This whole process started about a year and a half ago, just coordinating all the food and beverage functions that go along with the golf course.”
This is the first year this tournament will be held in Flagler County. From 2021 to 2025 the event was held at Timuquana Country Club in Duval County.
“It's been a very smooth transition from our event in Jacksonville down here to Flagler County,” Renfroe said. “I think for the membership itself, there's certainly going to be a great tournament experience for them. We have a hospitality suite that's built just for the members called The Bear Claw right here on the 18th hole. So, that's going to be an amazing experience. Great views of golf to see some of the greatest players that have ever played on the PGA Tour come and compete on their property. I think they have a lot to be proud of.”
At least one member was enthusiastic about having a PGA Tour Champions event at Hammock Beach.
“We have a beautiful property,” Hammock Beach resort member Bill Sussman said. We have two unbelievable golf courses, which will get showcased very well here. The more people who come, the more well showcased the property will be.”
The one place that the resort hasn’t had to make many changes is on the course. “The big concern is bunkers and greens,” said Michael Meehan, director for agronomy for Hammock Beach Golf Resort & Spa. “So our green speeds will be a little higher than we normally produce for membership. We maintain the golf course at a pretty high level year in and year out, day in and day out. So for us, really, it's just to take it to the next level, which is being consistent, because the players have a different expectation.”
Meehan said the tournament representatives came to experience the course and were happy with the layout and the ocean front location. For members who would like to experience the tournament, but also want to golf themselves that week, there is an alternative.
“You know, for the membership to have the secondary golf course to go play during tournament week when we're occupying the Ocean Course, I think is a treat,” Renfroe said. “So, I think they'll find themselves going and playing the Conservatory, but then coming back over the Ocean Course to enjoy hospitality and the great competition.”
Resort management is confident that the tournament will also be a great way for viewers to experience Hammock Beach.
“Being on the Golf Channel for three straight days, eight hours of coverage, 170 different countries, I told our sales team we're going to probably get at least one phone call,” Hauer said. “The exposure is the biggest thing for us, and then what we're going to be able to do for community and charity, because that’s why we’re all here. That’s why Jim and Tabitha Furyk are doing this, to raise as much money as they can.”
