Flagler Palm Coast sophomore Joseph Lombardo had just drained a 20-foot birdie putt on No. 9 at Palm Harbor Golf Club to pull the Bulldogs to within one stroke of Matanzas on Sept. 17 in the county rivals’ boys golf match.
Lombardo was a member of the final group, and they had one more hole to play. As they were walking to the par-4 No. 1, Lombardo admitted to coach Patrick Kleinfelder that he was a little nervous.
“I said, ‘That’s good. You should be nervous. The pros get nervous.’” Kleinfelder said.
Lombardo went on to sink a 3-foot putt for bogey to give FPC a two-stroke advantage on the final hole and lift the Bulldogs a 176-177 victory over the Pirates.
Lombardo finished with a team-best 41 to tie his lowest round of the season.
Kam Bonner of Matanzas was the low medalist with a par-36. The Pirates’ other scores were Gianni Cerbone, 45; Truman Gieger, 48; and Aiden Massaro, 48.
Rounding out the Bulldogs’ scores were Landon McNitt, 44; Zachary Peterson, 45; and Josiah Moreira 46.
FPC improved to 5-1 with its third win in three days. The Bulldogs also defeated Seabreeze 162-167 on Sept. 15 at Riviera Country Club, and then Atlantic 176-182 on Sept. 16 while battling heavy winds at Cypress Head Golf Club.
Landon McNitt led the Bulldogs against Seabreeze with a 37, while Lombardo shot a 41 and Peterson and Moreira shot a 42. McNitt shot a 41 at Cypress Head, while Moreira shot a 44 and Jayson Castle shot a 45.
The FPC girls golf team won a tri-match at Grand Reserve Golf Club on Sept. 17. Flagler Palm Coast finished with a score of 195 to defeat Menendez (240) and Father Lopez (243).
Ivey Tsouklaris led the Buldogs with a 41. Sydney Adams and Lilah Cool each shot a 48 and Taci Cook shot a 58.
